Underground Dance Theatre

Underground Dance Theatre is a collective of artists exploring new performance styles through progressive, high quality work at the meeting point of physical theatre, contemporary dance, and South African dance theatre. Founded in 2011 by Thalia Laric, Kristina Johnstone, Steven van Wyk and Cilna Katzke, Underground Dance Theatre aim to inspire, provoke and entertain through creating exciting new work that pushes artistic boundaries and initiates conversation.

The collective have received numerous awards, including;

  • SA Theatre Magazine Award for “Pulp” 2016

  • Kyknet Fiesta Award for Groundbreaking New Work for “Askoop”  2016

  • South African State Theatre Commission for “In Opstanding”  2016 

  • National Arts Council Grant for “LoveZero” 2015

  • Kyknet Fiesta Award for Best Dance/Physical Theatre Production for “Skoonveld” 2014          

  • National Arts Festival Standard Bank Special Silver Ovation Award for “Skoonveld” 2013
